Betrayal Trauma Counseling

Discovering a partner's infidelity or hidden sexual behavior is one of the most painful experiences a person can face. The shock, the questions, the feeling that the ground has shifted under your life — none of it means something is wrong with you. What you are experiencing has a name: betrayal trauma. And it is treatable.

What betrayal trauma feels like

Betrayal trauma is the emotional injury that follows the discovery that someone you trusted most has been living a hidden life. Many people describe symptoms that look a lot like post-traumatic stress: intrusive thoughts and mental replaying, hypervigilance and checking, waves of anger and grief that come without warning, trouble sleeping or concentrating, and painful self-doubt — wondering what you missed, or whether anything was real. These are normal responses to a profound relational injury. They are not overreacting, and they are not something you should have to white-knuckle through alone.

How we help

Waterstone has several counselors who specialize in betrayal trauma. Counseling begins with safety and stabilization — helping you regain your footing, manage the trauma responses, and make grounded decisions on your own timeline. There is no agenda here about what you should do with your relationship: this is your healing, at your pace, whether your partner is in recovery, in denial, or out of the picture.

We offer weekly individual counseling in our Springdale office, and telehealth sessions for clients across Arkansas. Many clients also drive to us from eastern Oklahoma, southern Missouri, and the surrounding region.

When you need more than weekly sessions

For those in the acute aftermath of discovery — or those who have been carrying this for years — we offer a dedicated multi-day Betrayal Trauma Intensive: four hours a day for two to five days of focused, private work with a specialized counselor. Clients travel from across the country for this program, and every intensive begins with a free 20–30 minute phone consultation.

Private, and at your pace

Every inquiry is handled with complete confidentiality. Waterstone is in-network with Blue Cross Blue Shield for standard outpatient counseling. Our counselors are Christians and faith-sensitive care is available for those who want it — and people of every background and belief are fully welcome here.
