Depression

Do you consistently feel tired, unmotivated, depressed, fatigued, or bored? If so, you may be experiencing symptoms of depression. According to some studies, about 5% of the American population is affected by clinical depression. A much high percentage is affected by situational depression, which can be brought on by any number of internal or external changes. Some of the most common symptoms of depression include:

  • Changes in sleeping patterns (lack of sleep or excessive sleep)

  • Loss or change in appetite

  • Irritability

  • Lack of energy

  • Feeling unmotivated

  • Unexplained sadness

  • Extreme changes in weight loss or gain

  • Low self-esteem and feelings of worthlessness

  • Anger

  • Alcohol or drug abuse

  • Loss of interest in hobbies and activities

  • Decreased sex drive

  • Withdrawal

All changes in life, whether positive or negative, cause stress. Whenever our typical coping mechanisms are unable to cope with this stress, it can lead to or intensify feelings of depression. If you are experiencing one or more of these symptoms on an ongoing or reoccurring basis, you should consider getting help from a professional counselor. There is no shame in admitting you need help.
